Campaign Pitch - Typical Objections, Your Successful Comebacks

Printable Version

1.      We’ve made so many cutbacks this year in staffing, hours, overtime, benefits that the employees’ attitude isn’t very good. They will resent this.

2.   Our employees and their families are hurting, themselves. I’m sure they can’t afford to donate.

  • The staff that has lost their jobs may need assistance.  Current employees can help them through United Way
  • We’d like to have the opportunity to educate your employees about community services they may want to access – or which could help their families and friends.
  • We’d just like to give them an opportunity to decide if they’d like to give.
  • We don’t necessarily expect large gifts from employees, but even relatively small gifts – when combined with others – can make a huge difference.
  • Our experience with other workplaces last year and this year is that people who are working are concerned about their neighbors and are being as generous as they can be.

3.   We don’t want to push our employees to donate to any particular cause. They can pick their own charities.

  • We don’t want to push or coerce them to give to United Way; we would just like the opportunity to tell them how United Way helps the community.
  • We’d just like to give them an opportunity to decide if they’d like to give.
  • United Way monitors programs for results.
  • Many people don’t know all the agencies that are working in the community.
  • United Way funds effective programs that meet the most pressing needs of our community. Some of these programs might not be very well known or visible but they are very effective.
  • United Way identifies emerging needs and effective programs that address those needs.
  • Donors can designate to specific non profit health and human service agencies.
  • United Way spreads the funds raised across the community and addresses a number of priority areas.
  • Even if employees chose not to Give, they might want to get involved to Advocate or Volunteer.
  • We’d just like to give them an opportunity to decide if they’d like to give.

4.      We don’t have the opportunity for you to meet or talk with our employees in a group.

5.      We’re just a small office, we don’t want a presentation.

  • We’ll be as flexible as you can be creative.
  • We’ve met on factory floors, loading docks, break rooms.
  • We can meet early in the morning and late at night.
  • We can piggy back on existing meetings.
  • We can be brief.
  • We’ll bring cider and donuts.

6.      We aren’t willing to process payroll deductions.

  • Payroll deduction makes it much easier for employees to donate.
  • You can remit the funds to us as infrequently as quarterly.
  • Ask the payroll department if it is possible. It might be easier than you think.
  • Let’s offer a campaign only with immediate cash, check or charge gifts this year.

7.      Our business/employees already donate to some specific causes. We don’t want to add United Way.

  • United Way volunteers work to identify the most pressing needs and the effective programs that address those needs.
  • Some of the programs United Way supports may not be very visible or well-known, but are meeting critical needs.
  • We’d like to talk with you/your employees about the programs that you would like to support.
  • We’d like the opportunity to talk to the employees and see if they would like to support the broader services which the United Way campaign supports.

8.      Our business can’t make a corporate gift.

  • That’s Ok.  We’d appreciate a chance to offer employees the opportunity to donate, however….  employees do like to see that the company is also supporting United Way.
  • Can you offer employee incentives?
