WENATCHEE — Not all people seen at the DSV Crisis Center were in crisis or had experienced violence.
That’s one of the reasons the center has changed its name to Sage, which stands for safety, advocacy, growth and empowerment.
“We wanted to have a name that eliminated violence and crisis, which we felt were barriers to client services,” said MaryAnne Preece, Sage director.
Preece noted that someone who has been the victim of identify theft, for example, has not experienced violence or may not consider themselves in crisis.
This is the fourth name change for the organization, which began more than 30 years ago. It has been called the Wenatchee Rape and Crisis Center, Phoenix Place and, for the past 10 years, the DSV Crisis Center.
The organization’s four programs are domestic violence services, sexual assault programs, NCW Child and Family Advocacy Center and crime victim services.
The center also has moved to 710 N. Chelan Ave., which offers the organization more room than its former Wenatchee location. Officials have been able to add a forensic interview room, where children can be interviewed if sexual assault or abuse is suspected; and a forensic exam room. where sexual assault exams can be conducted if the case is not an emergency, Preece said. Emergency cases are still handled at Central Washington Hospital.
