History of United Way of Chelan &
Douglas Counties
The United Way of Chelan & Douglas Counties has been assisting the people in this area for almost 70 years! Today we support 40 programs helping children, families, individuals and the elderly through 23 non-profit agencies. Money raised in our counties stays here, supporting and assisting people in need. Not a hand out, a hand up.
Over the years the United Way of Chelan & Douglas Counties has experienced five name changes, but our simple mission to be a leader in mobilizing and allocating resources to address the community needs and improve the quality of life for our neighbors has remained constant.
A brief look at our history of names:
- April 26, 1982: United Way of Chelan & Douglas Counties, given the fact that our member agencies provide service to both counties our name should reflect that as well.
- April 14, 1974: United Way of Greater Wenatchee, in an effort to tie into the nationally recognized name United Way
- July 13, 1956: United Good Neighbors (UGN)
- August 21, 1939: Wenatchee Community Chest, in an effort to better convey the purpose of the organization.
- April 1, 1939: Wenatchee Welfare Federation was formed.
Statement: To be a leader in mobilizing and allocating resources to address changing community needs and to improve the quality of life for our neighbors.

Message from the President
And Executive Director
The following pages offer an overview of activities during our fiscal year of April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007. It is our intention to keep donors informed of how we utilize their investment of time and money. Thank you for being a part of United Way.
After more than seven years as the executive director of United Way, Dianne Cornell left to pursue other opportunities. Prior to Dianne’s departure many plans were made to launch a successful campaign, including the return of Brian Flones and Mike Harum as campaign co-chairs. In July, the Board hired Alan Walker to serve as Executive Director.
Thank you for being a part of this year; we would not have been able to achieve so many victories without your help. Our member agencies and the programs we support are changing lives, and creating opportunities for individual people throughout Chelan and Douglas Counties. Those individuals added together total over 52,000 people receiving a hand up to a better life.
We have just completed a record fundraising year with total pledges of $715,562, a 9% increase from last year. Added to this is the generous in-kind and sponsor dollars of over $35,000 provided by almost 60 local businesses and individuals. We have our first Alexis de Tocqueville giver, have our campaign chairs secured three years out, have partnered with over 30 non-profit organizations to help form The Partnership for Children & Families, and have increased our presence in communities outside the greater Wenatchee Valley.
As the Board and staff plan for the year ahead, we expect many more exciting accomplishments and opportunities for our communities and United Way. One of the bigger endeavors will be the launching of an early learning initiative titled Born Learning, a nation-wide campaign to educate parents, care givers and the community as a whole on the importance of brain development and learning in children from birth to age five.
The following pages will provide you with information on how your money was put to use and some of the people who helped to make it all possible. Once again, thank you for your continued support for United Way of Chelan and Douglas Counties.
Sincerely,
Peggi Moxley Alan R. Walker
